A clause is a group of related words. A clause has both a subject and a predicate. There are two types of clauses.
Independent Clause – An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. Here is on example: We walk to school. This sentence expresses a complete thought and can stand alone.
Dependent Clause – A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence. Here is an example: when the cake is done baking. This clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone.
Prior to this, the students has had a small mini lesson on independent and dependent clauses. They are able identify them within a sentence. Pass out on index card to each student on which you have either written an independent nor dependent clause. (If you have an odd number of students. you may need to participate yourself or simply place the extra card on the board for students to check to see if they have a match). As you create the cards, ensures that all dependent and independent clause go together to make a complex sentence that makes sense. Instruct the students to leave the cord on their desks face down. Conduct a small oral reviewed of what makes a independent clause and an dependent clause for review to help alleviate any confusion during the next port. Instruct the students that on your cue, they will get up and walked around the room to find their partner (dependent will be looking for independent and vice versa) that makes a complex sentence that makes sense . I would inform the students that there are only l correct match for their card, so read and choose carefully. I also have my students sit once they think that they have found their match. Give the students a signal to move and they will go around the room to find their match.
After every student is seated, or at least have mode on attempt, then we review them as a class. (In the case that you have students who are outliers and cannot find their match, have them stand off to the side of the room to wait until you check as a class). One by one each pair will stand and read their complex sentence (each partner reading their port). The class then votes (thumbs up if correct. thumbs down if not). If they are correct they can turned in their cards and returned to their seats. If they are not correct. send them to the section of the room where you have the outliers standing to see if they can make a match. Continue with this until everyone has a match and has shared out and is seated.
